The Egypt was one of the most awesome culture for us to study in this day and age. In the ancient times, the Egyptians worshiped many gods and goddesses. Among them was Osiris Egyptian God of Underworld. As he was the god of the underworld, Osiris had the power over who was going to die. This made him become one of the supreme Egyptian gods.
Osiris Egyptian God of Underworld Son of Gods
The word “Osiris” came from an ancient Egyptian word “Wsis” meaning “mighty” or “powerful”. According to Heliopolis creation myth, Atum was the very first god from the self-creation. Atum then gave birth to a pair: Shu the God and Tefnut the Goddess. Shu and Tefnut later gave birth to Geb and Nut. Confusing as it might be, Geb and Nut gave birth to Osiris, Set, Isis, and Nephthys.
The Egyptians believed that Osiris was the first ruler of the Egyptians. The Egyptians owed him and respected him a lot. Because Osiris brought about the civilization, agriculture, and life generally to the Egypt. He became powerful and during his reign, everyone was happy and satisfied with what they had. The only one that was not alike was Set the sibling of Osiris. Set was jealous of the achievement of his brother. So he came up with conspiracy to get rid of Osiris.
The Attack of Set
Set created a coffin that only Osiris could fit in. During a feast, Set told the attendants that the coffin would be gifted to the one who was perfectly fit for the coffin. Everyone tried their luck but none won the coffin. When it came the turn of Osiris, he climbed into the coffin. As you guess, Set seized the opportunity and sealed the coffin. Osiris couldn’t escape it. Then Set pushed the coffin into the ocean to finally get rid of his famous sibling.
The coffin rest somewhere next to Byblos in Phoenicia. He remained there until his last breath.
Isis the wife of Osiris finally retrieved her husband’s body back. She was about to revive her husband but Set was quicker. Set cut the body of Osiris into pieces and threw it along Egypt. But Isis again retrieved her husband’s body back. The only thing that lost was his penis. Osiris was brought back to life again. He then ruled the Underworld. The reason why he didn’t rule the land of the living was because he was no longer complete.
As the ruler of the Underworld, Osiris always appeared in the white bandage from his chest to his feet. His skin color was one of the most remarkable things. Because Osiris was often depicted with the black or green color. People believed that the green color presented the color of rebirth while the black color presented for fertility. In fact, the Egypt once was called “Kemet” which meant “the black land” or “the fertile land”.
